Our History

The Parkland Community Living and Supports Society exists to improve the quality of life of children and adults with developmental disabilities through individual choices, dignity and rights. Parkland School is a branch of the P.C.L.A.S.S. umbrella, and thereby maintains the same motto.

Parkland School is a DSEPS (Designated Special Education Private School), governed by Alberta Education. The school operates specialized programming designed to meet the educational needs of  children and young adults with cognitive and physical disabilities. These children are referred to us by public school jurisdictions, due to their very unique and specialized care and learning needs. Our purpose is to provide individualized programming which will enable each student to maximize his/her potential. We provide a full range of academic, sensory, pre-vocational, recreational and social skills areas which are needed for successful and productive participation in community life. In order for a student to attend our school, they must be referred to us by the jurisdiction in which they reside, and must meet strict requirements.

Our school once the addition was built.
Parkland School first opened in January 1960 in a church basement with a single teacher/bus driver. In 1963, the original school building was completed. To meet increased demand, a further addition was built in 1982 to provide office space and an additional classroom (seen in the photo here). In an effort to make Parkland School a more welcome and inviting place to learn, a creative playground was added in 1983, and a new computer lab and Snoezelen room were completed in 1996. Still not large enough to house our total client base, we built a portable which opened in September 1997 and a second portable was added in 1999. A barrier-free, wheelchair accessible playground was erected in June 2008. We continue to grow and expand each year.
We value your input as parents and encourage you to consult regularly with your child's teacher and attend parent-teacher interviews to stay abreast of your child's progress. You are welcome to visit the school at anytime (please note: this is not applicable during covid-19). It is your right to look at your child's cumulative record binder. However, the files must be kept in the school - just ask the Director for approval before requesting the file from the Executive Assistant.

Our staff are highly specialized and continuously trained in order to meet the needs of the students we serve. We value all of our team highly, and strive to create the best work environment possible, because we know that a happy work environment makes for the best possible learning environment for our students.
